How the bitcoin rich keep it.

The rich list is full of coins that sit on exchanges, in other people's custody. The holders who sleep well keep their keys themselves. This page is about doing that properly.

Why self-custody is the dividing line

Bitcoin on an exchange is a claim against a company; bitcoin secured by keys you control is the asset itself. Exchange failures have burnt holders in every cycle, and the biggest addresses on the rich list are exchange wallets pooling other people's coins for a reason: most owners never take custody. A hardware wallet - a small offline device that signs transactions without exposing your keys to the internet - is how meaningful amounts are held by people who intend to keep them.

Rules that outrank any device choiceBuy direct from the manufacturer, never second-hand or from marketplace resellers. Write the seed phrase on paper or steel, never photograph it, never type it into anything with a screen. Test a small send first. And tell no one what you hold - the cheapest attack on a bitcoin holder has always been simply knowing who they are.

Which one, though?

For a first device, the Trezor Safe 3 or Jade is inexpensive enough to be an easy decision. For larger amounts, bitcoiners converge on bitcoin-only firmware (Jade, BitBox bitcoin edition, Coldcard) on the logic that less code means less attack surface. Whichever you choose, the upgrade that matters most is the one from custodial to self-custody - the device brand is a detail by comparison.
