How many people own bitcoin?

Somewhere between one and six percent of humanity - and the honest answer includes the reason nobody can be more precise.

Why the range is so wide

The blockchain records addresses, not people, and the mapping breaks in both directions. One person can hold fifty addresses; one exchange address can represent five million customers; and since spot ETFs launched, millions of brokerage customers have bitcoin exposure without any address at all. Every estimate is a model of those overlaps, and the models disagree by 4x.

The useful takeaways

The honest caveatAll distribution figures count addresses, not people. One person can control many addresses, and one exchange cold wallet can pool coins belonging to millions of customers - the single largest bitcoin address is an exchange wallet holding 248,598 BTC. Address percentiles are the most precise public measure that exists, but treat them as a well-lit approximation of human wealth, not a census.
